Air panel urged to deny pollution permit for Xcel coal plant
November 20, 2009 -- Neighborhood, university, religious and other group representatives packed a state air-quality regulators' hearing Thursday night — pushing for cleaner energy. More than 50 delivered comments urging Colorado Air Quality Control commissioners to reject a pollution permit sought by Xcel Energy to continue running Cherokee, the Denver area's biggest coal-fired power plant.
Xcel Rate Increase, New Coal Plant Challenged in Court
September 21, 2009 - A lawsuit filed today in Denver, Colorado challenges the cost recovery for Xcel Energy’s new 750 MW Unit 3 coal plant in Pueblo, Colorado. Among the charges in the lawsuit are that Xcel failed to heed numerous signs that building a new coal plant in this century was not a prudent thing to do and that it also failed to even assess a long-term coal supply for the plant. Coal Supply Constraints: Cheap & Abundant, or is it?
In an extensively resarched report using publicly available data, Clean Energy Action member Leslie Glustrom says "we were quite shocked to find that most of the coal in the United States is buried too deeply to be accessible in large quantities or at reasonable prices." Assumptions about the cheap price of coal figure critically in utility planning decisions including the option to choose renewable energy to generate electricity.
Glustrom documents that US coal supplies are not in the 200 year range as commonly assumed, but more likely in the 50 year range. More
