Valmont Coal Plant
Clean Energy Action is conducting a multi-month campaign to educate the public about the environmental impact of the Valmont coal plant in Boulder, Colorado. That includes noxious air pollutants such mercury, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and now in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling, carbon dioxide, estimated at over one million tons per year.
We are also working with the City of Boulder and County governments to promote research on alternatives to coal burning at Valmont. Could the plant be repurposed to burn biomass or other fuels? Could Xcel use some of the land on which Valmont stands to build renewable energy generating facilities?
Clean Energy Action helpled organize citizen participation before Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment hearing on the renewal of Valmont's operating permit under the Clean Air Act in the summer of 2009. Opposition to the permit is continuing at the EPA level.
