Polis Buckled Under Pressure of Oil and Gas
‘Tell Congressman Jared Polis that he Cannot Betray 300,000 Signatures Supporting Clean Air and Pure Water in Colorado’
At the eleventh hour, Polis reached a compromise with Governor Hickenlooper Monday to throw out the hundreds of thousands of petition signatures for two ballot initiatives Polis was supporting that would have protected citizen of Colorado from oil and gas development. The people of Colorado will not get a chance to take this important issue to the ballot this November. Instead, an eighteen member task force is being created. This commission will be chaired by Gwen Lachelt, LaPlata County Commissioner and founder of Earthworks. According to the Coloradan, the commission will be comprised of “six local politicians and residents, six industry representatives, and six ‘respected Coloradans.'”
“For the first time, this puts citizens on an equal footing with industry,” according to Polis. Will they adequately represent the hundreds of thousands of citizens of Colorado who supported taking this issue to the ballot? Will the legislature hear the recommendations of this commission if they do support stricter regulations for oil and gas development? Ask yourself and ask Polis, tonight:
